The goal of a chemical peel treatment is to exfoliate and renew the skin by removing its superficial layers through the application of a controlled chemical solution, producing a mild and safe exfoliating reaction.

Different chemical agents may be used depending on the skin’s needs, including AHAs, resorcinol, Jessner’s solution, salicylic acid, among others. This technique is indicated for concerns such as acne, pigmentation, scars, uneven texture, and other epidermal conditions.

A chemical peel works by reducing the outer layers of the skin (epidermis), helping to eliminate dead skin cells and promote a healthier, more radiant appearance.

Contraindications

Chemical peel treatments are not recommended for clients with the following conditions:

1. Pregnancy

2. Cancer or undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation

3. Use of retinoids (must discontinue 2–3 weeks prior to appointment)

4. Photosensitizing treatments

5. Photosensitizing medications

6. Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI

7. Dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema

8. Hormonal disorders

9. Recently tanned skin (wait 4–6 weeks)

10. Vitiligo

11. Active acne treatments or acne medication

12. Diabetes

13. Open wounds
